Tg: To capitalize on the previous question, this story has resonated with many who see themselves and their experiences through Montoya, how does that make you feel, and will you continue to connect with readers, who do not necessarily see themselves in the mainstream stories, through your writing?
ZC: It’s the most amazing feeling really. I mean, my first novel, The Vicious Deep, had side characters who were part Ecuadorean. Because of previous rejections I thought that was all I could sneak into a book, the way veggies sneak into a toddler’s meal. But then I wrote Brooklyn Brujas which is my love letter to urban fiction that I read as a teen and follows three Brujas sister. She wrote romance novels with Latina heroes. Middle grade with Ecuadorean families. So, yeah, I got over my fear as I’ve been writing this ever since. Readers will probably find me now because Atria has done a great job of making me visible, but I’ve been here for nearly a decade, and will continue to write the stories I love.
