Torc and Daimler Enter 4th Year of AV . Collaboration

Daimler Truck AG Company Torrc bots The parent company is entering the fourth year of their collaboration in marketing long-range autonomous trucks to the US market.

Since Daimler Truck’s stake in the largest investment in Torc in 2019, the two have worked to be the first to market a profitable autonomous truck solution. Torc continues to operate as an independent subsidiary and serves as a leader between the two for autonomous driving system development, innovation and fleet testing from its headquarters in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Torc launched two new facilities this year, the first in January in Austin, Texas, a 21,000-square-foot engineering product development center. Torc chose Austin because of the city’s commitment to innovation and the talent pool that drives technology development and product growth.

In April, Torc opened a 30,000-square-foot technology center in Stuttgart, Germany. Torc Europe GmbH taps talent in one of Germany’s major automotive development regions. The Stuttgart team supports the development of the SAE Level 4 virtual driver for deployment to independent trucks in the United States. The default driver consists of the software and computing components of the AV drive system.

Since last year, Torc has doubled its headcount to more than 600 and has hired seven executives with extensive experience in emerging technologies and transportation. The company also brought in a new CEO, Schmidt, who was the former head of Daimler’s Autonomous Technology Group. Torc founder and former CEO Michael Fleming He remains on the Torc board of directors.

In late March, the company announced the launch of the Torc Independent Advisory Council (TAAC) to gain insights from stakeholders in the trucking industry and meet requirements for integrating independent technology into the freight network. TAAC and Torc leaders meet quarterly throughout the year as well as collaborate independently on critical areas such as integrating autonomous trucks with existing freight operations and regulatory challenges in the US

Torc and Schneider recently announced that the trucking company, which ranks 11th in the fleet owner 500: The 2022 Top For-Hire fleets will serve as Torc’s independent test fleet partner. Schneider will provide cargo loads for Torc pilots and truckload cargo ideas that will help guide the ongoing development and marketing of autonomous long-haul trucks.

In preparation for a full axle-to-axle experience, Torc has advanced its on-highway capabilities, including complex mergers and lane-changing maneuvers. Other competencies of the Torc technology include autonomous detection, interaction with traffic lights, and navigation at complex intersections. Torc also recently started powering its vehicles with an updated sensor suite, computers, and additional integrations that increase proficiency testing as the team expands its autonomous fleet.
