TCM DIY Empress Dowager Cixi Stain Removal Mask

According to legend, after Empress Dowager Cixi of the Qing Dynasty in China gave birth to Emperor Tongzi while she was in her twenties, black spots appeared on her face. However, under the care and treatment of the imperial doctor, the dark spots on her face gradually faded away.

Shen Yunzi, Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at Changsheng Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic presented the ancient Qing Dynasty Yurong Mask (Beautiful Face) in NTD’s “Ancient Chinese Medicine in the Modern World” program on its Asia Pacific channel.

It can be used with Beauty Herbal Flower Tea and Brightening Sishen Porridge for better whitening and brightening effects for dark spots.

Shen said the dark spots are caused by the abnormal buildup of melanin in a specific part of the skin. There are many reasons for the appearance of freckles on the face, including genetic factors, ultraviolet rays, hormones, etc.

Diet is also one of the reasons for the appearance of dark spots. If people eat light-sensitive foods, such as citrus fruits, crustacean seafood, etc., and do not have enough sun protection, the skin is prone to developing dark spots.

Dark spots are called “various facial diseases” in traditional Chinese medicine. They are mostly caused by a pathogen, the evil qi (vital energy) that invades the skin, resulting in repulsion of qi and blood, liver qi stagnation, qi stagnation and blood stagnation on the skin, then spots form.

The so-called “external evil” refers to ultraviolet rays, pollutants in the environment, etc.

According to the treatment based on TCM syndrome differentiation theory, there are three main reasons for getting dark spots:

1) Weak spleen and stomach: Insufficient blood and blood supply, such as eating a lot of raw and cold foods, weakens the stomach and cannot generate enough blood and blood to nourish the facial skin.

2) Liver qi stasis: stagnation of qi, blood and phlegm under the skin is mostly related to long-term stress or emotional instability, and these dark spots are generally darker than the dark spots that make up the weak spleen and weak stomach.

3) Kidney failure: usually associated with old age, chronic illness, or excessive sexual intercourse. These dark spots are long-lasting and gradually deepen, accompanied by a dull complexion. These spots usually appear in the eye socket or chin.

According to Shen, the spots often reflect the state of the internal organs. The forehead belongs to the heart, the left side of the cheek to the liver, the right side to the lungs, and the nose or the area around the cheeks may be connected to the spleen and stomach.

If the lip color is dull, then there may be some stagnation in the womb. These dark spots related to internal organs can be treated with acupuncture, herbal medicine used internally or externally, ear acupuncture, etc.

The Empress Dowager Cixi Spot Removal Mask

According to Shen, the Empress Dowager Cixi whitening formula is called Yurong Powder, which helped her get rid of spots, whiten her skin, and moisturize.

According to the “Golden Mirror of Medicine” (a series of traditional Chinese medicine classics complied with by the imperial doctors of the Qianlong government in the Qing Dynasty), Yurong powder contains 19 traditional Chinese medicines, namely pearl powder, mung bean powder, Poria and Angelica root, large-headed rhizome , Fructus tripoli, Bombyx batryticatus, Typhonium giganteum, Asarum, Ampelopsis japonica, Bletilla rhizome, Nardostachys jatamansi, Indian Sandalwood, Saposhnikoviae Radix, Job’s Dried’s Tears, White Carnation Seed.

Using 19 herbs to make a luxurious “palace-level” mask is a bit tricky. Shin introduced the simplified version of the Yurong Mask:

Ingredients: 3 g (0.10 oz) Bletilla rhizome, 3 g (0.10 oz) fructus tripoli, 3 g (0.10 oz) angelica root, 3 g (0.10 oz) Job’s tear, 3 g (0.10 oz) Poria, 3 g ( 0.10 oz) mung bean, 3 g (0.10 oz) large-headed aractiloid rhizome, 3 g (0.10 oz) swallow root, 3 g (0.10 oz) Bombyx Batryticatus, 1 g (0.03 oz) pearl powder, 5 cc (1.7 oz) liquid) of honey and an appropriate amount of water.

How to use: If it is used for skin lightening and whitening on a regular basis, such as lightening small spots on the face, you can apply it once a week; If the problems with dark spots are serious, you can apply it daily.

For those with acne, sunburn or facial inflammation, the Yurong mask can still be used. Shen also noted that swallow root in the mask formula has a heat-purifying and anti-inflammatory effect, helping to soothe the skin.

Although the above formula has been simplified, it still takes a lot of effort to buy the ingredients one by one, and then grind them to make the Yurong mask. Shen made a “whitening and blemish removal mask” simpler and easier, and can be made at home.

Ingredients: 30g (1 oz) almond flour, 1/4 egg white, 5 cc (0.17 fl oz) honey, 5 cc (0.17 fl oz) milk.

Users should pay attention to the fineness of the almond flour particles. If the particles are too coarse, they may hurt the skin.

Method: Put the almond flour in a bowl, then add the egg whites, honey and milk, and stir until we get a paste. Then apply it directly to the face with your hands or a mask brush. Avoid contact with the eye area when applying the mask. Wash it off after 10-15 minutes. To prevent the mask from drying out too quickly, make sure the texture is smooth and the mixture isn’t too thick.

Usage: once a week.

It should be noted that people with egg allergy are advised to skip the egg white, and then adjust the amount of milk or water a little to make the mask the right consistency.

In addition to the external use of the mask, nutritional therapy can nourish the body and achieve a physique that is not prone to spots. Shen introduced the Beauty Herbal Flower and Brightening Sishen Porridge tea.

Ingredients: 20 g (0.71 oz) mother-of-pearl, 5 roses, 10 g (0.35 oz) white chrysanthemum, 20 g (0.71 oz) poria, 10 g (0.35 oz) loofah, 10 jujube.

Mother-of-pearl is a mother-of-pearl shell, which is most effective when cracked before cooking.

Poria strengthens the spleen and moisture, which reduces the formation of dark spots due to a deficiency of the spleen. Poria also helps reduce tyrosinase activity, thus inhibiting melanin production.

Chrysanthemum removes heat and calms the liver, reducing the formation of dark spots due to stagnation of the liver.

Rose can revitalize Qi (vital energy) and blood, improve blood circulation of Qi and blood on the face, lead to rosy cheeks, and fade spots.

Jujube nourishes the spleen and nourishes Qi. Cutting the jujube will release more sweetness from the fruit.

Loofah sweeps and activates the meridian system, purifies heat and eliminates phlegm, eliminating blood stasis in the meridian system.

Shen pointed out that this kind of herbal flower tea is light and suitable for ordinary people to drink. If you are a fan of sweets, you can add a little honey after fermentation to moisturize the skin.

Do not waste the cooked ingredients after brewing the tea. You can prepare it a second time. Take the juice and apply it on the face. It is recommended to dip the mask paper in the juice and apply it for 10 minutes. Be sure to remove the mask when it is half dry, otherwise it will absorb the moisture of the skin.
