Linux, Mass – (work wire) – NASA may have rovers on Mars, but T-Mobile is working on something closer to home. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) today announced that Un-carrier is working with them InDro Robotics, Canada’s leading research and development company in aerial and ground robotics, to make the world safer. The companies have successfully completed trials using T-Mobile 5G to remotely connect and operate Indro Robotics’ ground industrial inspection robots, testing safety and inspection capabilities at electrical substations.
Sentinel InDro Robotics was selected by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to rate mobile robots on the ground based on their ability to provide 24-hour substation asset inspection and security monitoring. Sentinel was up to the task and continuously monitored as all data was streamed back to maintenance teams in near real time using a dedicated integrated 5G router connected to the T-Mobile network. The probe was able to follow predetermined paths while working independently and was remotely controlled by operators via the 5G network.
“Like most robots, Sentinel requires an ultra-reliable network with low latency, and T-Mobile 5G has proven more than capable,” said John Sau, Executive Vice President of Advanced and Emerging Technologies at T-Mobile. “The possibilities for using 5G in ways that keep people safe, make life easier and help businesses save money are endless. We have barely scratched the surface of what is possible.”
While this robot won’t be embarking on any space adventures anytime soon, it may be up for a challenge in the future. With a thermal camera, depth sensor, and 30x zoom capabilities, the InDro Robotics’ Sentinel can read and report measurement levels while monitoring for anomalies such as volatile component temperatures, intruders, wildlife hazards, and more. All of this can be logged and returned to maintenance teams almost instantly, which means fewer deployments, faster responses, and increased on-site safety. Without reliable connectivity and 5G speeds, Sentinel’s job would be nearly impossible.
