Amazon Robotics

Amazon Robotics, formerly Kiva Systems, is a software developer and manufacturer of machines used in Amazon warehouses and fulfillment centers. Headquartered in Massachusetts, its flagship product is mobile robotic order fulfillment systems.

Switching from a manual object scanning model to machine learning (ML), Amazon Robotics has remained under the same brand name. Working with AWS, I used Amazon SageMaker to help its developers set up, build, train, and deploy their ML models on execution bots.

Alliora is a carton box manufacturer based in Northwest France. It produces a variety of boxes for customers in a range of markets, such as cosmetics, board games and champagne.

Allora tried to automate the production line with an industrial robot that was difficult to use. However, the need for automation is still significant, as repetitive tasks have resulted in some employees developing musculoskeletal disorders.

Contacting one of their local robotics distributors, Sterkelec, Alliora ended up using the Robotiq Palletizing Solution, which consists of a collaborative robot arm and a suction-powered final actuator.

By using Cubot in one of its production lines, the Allora was able to hire fewer workers during high production periods and achieve a smoother production line overall.

Kid Creek Mine

Kidd Creek Mine is an underground mineral mine located in Ontario, Canada. Owned and operated by Glencore, a Swiss multinational, the mine operations are supported by several unmanned aerial services as well as underground inspection specialists.

Workers at the Kid Creek Mine are familiar with traditional tools in their work and inspections. They also used basic robots to access potential mining areas to ensure the safety of the miners.

By working with Boston Dynamics and its four-legged robot Spot, they were able to access even more accurate data. The robotic robot withstands a range of harsh terrain without any problem.

“Having a tool that can quickly and reliably get to everywhere we need to get information and get it back to us is invaluable to our business,” Ian McKillib saysdirector of technical services for mining, Kidd Operations.

Because engineering-based mining relies primarily on up-to-date data, Boston Dynamics has enabled Kid Creek to have a constant flow of data to make worker safety decisions.
