belin, the recipient of this presentation, both share the same birthday, and in 2020, I decided to make my first DIY memory kit a slide-focused approach to celebrating her 30th birthday. If you want to create a personalized presentation for that special someone in your life this holiday season, follow these steps to create something truly meaningful:

How to make your own memory surface

The first step: designing the questionnaire

Start by drafting a questionnaire about the life of your loved one. You can include questions about their childhood, favorite memories, hobbies, and anything else you think would be interesting to know.

Once you decide which questions you want to ask, program them into a tool like Google Forms or Typeform. Next, send the survey to friends and family members who know your loved one well. Ask them to fill out the questionnaire and return it to you on a specific date so that you can have all the information you need in time.

Second Step: Choose the format

Once you’ve collected all the responses to your survey, it’s time to start putting together your presentation. I recommend using a platform like Canva because its beautiful templates make it easy to drag and drop elements and add text.

Step Three: Create your group

Start by creating a title slide with the name and photo of your loved one. Next, start adding slides for each question you asked in the survey. Include quotes from loved ones, photos, videos, or anything else that brings memories to life.

Don’t worry if you don’t have enough content for each question. What is important is to focus on quality over quantity. The goal is to create a presentation that your loved one will cherish for years to come, not something rushed and sloppy.

Step Four: Export and Print

When you’re done putting together your presentation, export it as a PDF file. Then print and tape them together to create an actual book of memories. Alternatively, you can send the digital copy to your friend so they can view it on their phone, tablet, or computer.

This process is *even* satisfactory. For Belen, the idea, design, and concept of her memory suite (which he called “Belen Voyage”) culminated in a well-intentioned presentation that was injected with plenty of PDAs. The final result? A huge 100-page presentation full of affirmations, quotes, chants, mood boards, and tender declarations of how special we love her.

I am so grateful that I settled on this one instead of the other. The process of making it was intimate and reflective, providing much-needed memories, laughter, and happy tears.
