Eclipse users include Theia Arduino, Arm, EclipseSource, Ericsson, logi.cals, SAP, STMicroelectronics, and TypeFox
/EIN News/ – BRUSSELS, Belgium, October 18, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – The Eclipse Foundation, one of the world’s largest open source organizations, is celebrating its fifth anniversary. eclipse theia, with a new type of software release that augments the current Theia monthly updates. Known as Theia Community Edition, this new beat will bring 3 months’ worth of Eclipse Theia updates in one release. The only exception is the inaugural edition which will include all major updates to Eclipse Theia for 2022.
Eclipse Theia is an open source platform for developing an integrated development environment for cloud and desktop devices and tools based on modern web technologies. Theia provides full flexibility to adopters to build custom IDEs, domain specific tools and complete white-labeled solutions. At the same time, it is compatible with current de-facto standards, such as Language Server Protocol (LSP), VS Code extensions, and even user interface technologies such as React.
“Eclipse Theia proves itself as Next generation tools and applications platform From the Eclipse Foundation. Theia has been a powerful driver of innovation since its inception 5 years ago,” says Mike Milinkovitch, CEO of the Eclipse Foundation. “With the introduction of the Community Edition, Theia continues to set the heartbeat of the fast-growing Eclipse Cloud DevTools ecosystem. Happy Birthday to Eclipse Thea on its 5th Anniversary! “
As mentioned earlier, to enable the cutting edge and consistently rapid innovation for its adopters, Theia follows a monthly release cycle. In addition to this monthly release, starting in September 2022, Theia will offer a community edition every three months, which promotes development for adopters and the integration of technologies. Our first community release will include more of these innovations, including everything developed in 2022. Some of these features include:
- New toolbar – The most obvious user feature added to Theia in 2022 is the support for a configurable toolbar. Theia toolbar comes with a great deal of flexibility. As a gadget creator, you can decide whether or not it is part of your gadget and what it looks like at first. Users of your gadget can adapt the toolbar, add, remove, and rearrange items. It is also possible for users to define custom icons for actions.
- UX improvements A lot of work has been spent on numerous user experience improvements throughout the Theia workbench. Examples include improved support for multiple editors, reorganization of menus and improved tab display
- Memory views and disassembly – Since 1.28, Theia has offered a comprehensive disassembly offering powered by Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP)
- Compatibility with VS كود Code Extension One of the great things about Eclipse Theia is that it is able to host VS Code extensions. As a builder of a tool or IDE based on Theia, you can make the features provided as part of VS Code extensions from your product, such as language servers
- Improvement for adopters – Overhaul of documentation, new testing framework, and other improvements especially for developers creating new apps with Eclipse Theia

Quotes from the sponsors and contributors of the Eclipse Theia project:
Rob Moran, Director of Engineering, Online Tools at Arm . said:. “The flexibility of the platform allows all kinds of features to be added, adapted and removed. I don’t think it is currently possible to efficiently create a rich IDE for the web without using Theia. The community edition will provide a good integration point between Theia, neighboring technologies and the adopter community.”
“For our client base, Theia addresses the need for a flexible platform to build modern tools and IDEs in a unique way,” said Dr. Jonas Helming, Principal Software Engineer and CEO. Therefore, we are seeing an ever-increasing number of commercial adopters. The introduction of the Theia Community Release coordinates the adoption of participating stakeholders, including adopters, and third-party technologies such as Eclipse GLSP or EMF.cloud And of course the Project Thea team.”
“Due to its flexibility and the surrounding ecosystem, Eclipse Theia is frequently used as a platform for building custom tools in the embedded domain. Openness of the project in all its aspects is a prerequisite for its adoption in the context of building in-house developer tools. This includes an open development process, ‘no’ to telemetry and blockchain Transparent supply. We expect the community release to create significant synergies in this important region.” Matthew Kozam, Erickson
“Theia’s integration with external services, its commercially-friendly openness, and its ability to deeply adapt to the demands of domain-specific user flows make it a truly unique platform for new tools, as well as for developing wealthy client tools into modern ones,” said Heinrcih Steininger, CTO, Logi.cals GmbH. Also key in this regard is its vibrant ecosystem, such as Eclipse GLSP for domain-specific graphic editors, Theia’s Playwright’s comprehensive testing library, Theia.cloud for a simple hosting solution, and much more. The new version of Theia supports version alignment across Theia, its ecosystem, and custom plugins, which in turn will simplify maintenance and quality assurance for Theia-based products.”
“The flexible architecture of the Theia platform allows adopters to control every visual and behavioral aspect of displaying their custom tools,” said Miro Spunman, Principal Software Engineer and CEO of Typefox. “It is almost impossible to build tools like the new generation Arduino IDE using other off-the-shelf solutions. We adopt Theia as the basis for many custom IDE solutions. We expect the community release to facilitate the long-term maintenance of these adopter projects.”
