Enel opens a new innovation lab in Tel Aviv for artificial intelligence and robotics in renewable energy and power grids

  • Enel AI & Robotics Lab aims to collaborate with Israeli startups to advance innovation in artificial intelligence and robotics applied to renewable energy sources and power distribution networks
  • This is Enel’s fourth innovation initiative, since the company first opened a center in Israel in 2016, to advance the group’s commitments to sustainability and the energy and electricity transformation.

Rome / Tel Aviv, September 19The tenth2022 – Enel today inaugurated the Enel AI & Robotics Lab, a lab dedicated to exploring innovative applications of artificial intelligence and robotics in renewables and energy grids, as well as developing sustainable solutions and materials. This is the fourth innovation initiative launched by the Enel Group in Israel sponsored by Enel Green Power and Enel Grids, the two arms of the group dedicated, respectively, to clean energy generation and energy distribution.

The opening saw the participation of Sergio Barbanti, Italian Ambassador to Israel, Gideon Friedman, Chief Scientist at the Israeli Ministry of Energy, Dr. Amy Appelbaum, Chief Scientist and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Israel Innovation Authority, and Avi Hasson, CEO of Startup Nation Central. For Enel, the meeting was attended by Michel Chrysostomo, CEO of Enel Green Power, Salvatore Bernabé, and President of Innovability® at Enel, Ernesto Sciora.

“The Enel AI and Robotics Lab is a new milestone in the group’s journey to advance innovation for the energy transition,” President Enel said Michel Chrysostomo. “Innovation helps our group’s mission to improve sustainability in electricity generation, grid development and digitization, as well as end-use electrification, thus creating long-term shared value for our stakeholders. Through the new lab, we aim to further expand our collaboration with Israel’s vibrant innovation environment, creating The best solutions to our needs and the discovery of new opportunities for development, a continuation of the success stories we have seen so far through the Open Innovability® approach.”

Located in the center of Tel Aviv, Enel AI & Robotics Lab offers startups a space of approximately 300m2 of open spaces and meeting rooms as well as a lab area, allowing for both office activities as well as prototyping and experimenting with small robots, drones and sensors. The lab will support the development of artificial intelligence and robotics technologies, particularly those focused on automation and digitization in renewable energy sources, network creation and operation, as well as the development of innovative and sustainable materials. It will host early-stage startups and give them technical and commercial validation, giving access to testing sites, real data, technical know-how, hardware and software. The validation process will include a Proof of Concept (PoC) with the ultimate goal of expanding the global reach of those startups that Enel selects as solution providers. In addition, the lab will collaborate with universities, local businesses, and innovation communities to interact with the Israeli ecosystem, as well as host workshops and meetups for the deep challenges and use cases for which Enel is looking for highly innovative solutions.

The lab began operating in June 2022, and hosted the first three-day innovation bootcamp, during which various commercial and technical challenges were explored and solutions were discussed with more than a dozen

startup companies. Future training camps will provide players in the ecosystem with an opportunity to work with Enel on many challenges, including:

  • Automation solutions for the construction of photovoltaic power plants, to ensure a safe, efficient and effective working environment;
  • Ensuring worker safety through safe driving and monitoring of risky behaviors in the field;
  • Digitization and automation using artificial intelligence techniques and optimization models to validate Advanced solutions to support operational processes in the field;
  • innovative solutions for the operation and maintenance of renewable energy plants and distribution networks to increase the number of tasks that can be performed remotely or independently (for example, multifunctional robots, visual analytics models, etc.);
  • Using drones in the utility industry and taking advantage of overhead networks to wirelessly charge drones.

Enel has been deeply involved in the Israeli ecosystem since launching the first innovation center in August 2016 in Tel Aviv. Since then, the group has been working with local startups, including through initiatives focused on the sector: FinSec Lab, which is located in Beersheba and dedicated to financial technology and cybersecurity, and Infralab, which focuses on smart infrastructure and construction. . To date, the center and two labs have explored about 1,500 startups, 55 of which have been involved in innovative projects, resulting in nine startups scaling their Enel solutions. The company works with Israeli startups on joint ventures across its operations, from cybersecurity, fintech, predictive maintenance and automation, to green energy generation and e-mobility. In one of the largest projects underway today with Israeli startup Brenmiller Energy, Enel has integrated a rock-based thermal energy storage (TES) system at a combined-cycle power plant in Italy. The solution developed by Brenmiller ensures operational flexibility and increases service delivery capacity for the grid, as well as promoting the growth and integration of renewables into the grid. Furthermore, Enel is developing and testing with Gadfin, a startup that designs innovative, long-range solutions for drones, an inspection system that can be pre-programmed to automatically scan power lines and produce a digital twin for distribution networks in a way that is faster, cheaper and more sustainable than the current process that uses Helicopters or regular drones.

Globally, Enel has a network of nine hubs and six labs that work alongside start-ups and SMEs to develop technology solutions and implement pilot projects by providing access to global industrial assets, labs, experts, and related data for a pool based on a network of more than 70 million. client. This allows analysts to be supported throughout the entire process and emphasizes the group’s open power mindset. To date, Enel’s innovation centers and labs have explored more than 13,000 startups, resulting in more than 500 PoC projects and more than 120 scaling up.
