In September of 2016, Seaside Park was the target of a terrorist bombing by Ahmad Khan Rahimi. Rahimi, who was inspired by ISIS and Al Qaeda, planted an explosive device on our runway, all the way to the Seaside Semper Five Marine Corps Charity 5K race. Fortunately, the start of the race was delayed, so had the race started on time, the bomb would have gone off as the racers were passing by where Rahimi planted the canister. This is another example where the drone would have given us the tactical advantage of putting our eyes in the area rather than putting the first responder directly in harm’s way.

Every year we receive a number of calls for missing children in town. The drone will give us a greater chance of finding the baby in a shorter time. As we all know, time is crucial in these situations. We have also received a number of calls for swimmers/boat riders in distress. Our beaches are unmanned 24/7 with lifeguards, and our fire department is volunteer. We are not equipped with a boat or jet ski. Earlier this week, we were sent to a boat in distress in the bay with three children on board taking in the water. The drone will provide us with the ability to determine the exact location of personnel as well as to drop flotation devices. “….
