Amazon Canada has opened the most technologically advanced robotics facility in the country

One of five of its kind globally, it is Amazon’s newest fulfillment center in Barhaven, OntarioIt will create more than 2,500 job opportunities

Ottawa, ONAnd the October 21 2022 /CNW/ – Amazon Canada today celebrated the opening of its newest and most advanced robotics facility, YOW3, in Barhaven, Ontario. The only facility of its kind in Canadaone of only five companies globally, YOW3 will create more than 2,500 jobs and provide an opportunity for employees to work alongside some of the company’s latest technology.

“Today is a huge milestone for Amazon as we celebrate the opening of the most technologically advanced robotics facility in the country,” said Harsh Khaitan, Amazon Canada Regional Director of Operations. “We are pleased to expand our presence over a decade in the Canada Through our third facility in Ottawa region, and we are excited to continue creating jobs for the local community.”

Spread over 2.6 million square feet across four floors, YOW3 will store up to 20 million items at any one time. Amazon works between these items Robinand RWC4 and Kermit Robots, each designed to improve the employee experience by enhancing safety and productivity:

  • RobinA robotic arm that can split, understand, process, identify, and place a packet on a sorting robot, improving employee experience by supporting employees with repetitive tasks.
  • RWC4: A robotic arm that sorts handbags, and logistics units to Amazon’s facility hub, by destination, and builds pallets.
  • Kemet: A cart that focuses on hauling empty bags throughout the facility and can adjust its speed and trajectory as needed.

“By using robots, we can help employees with tasks that involve lifting heavy objects or repetitive motions,” Khaitan said. “We experiment and apply technology with the goal of increasing safety, improving our employees’ experience, and providing service to our customers.”

Other unique technologies at the facility include Canadian-made semi-automated packing stations, more than 12 kilometers of conveyor belts, and semi-automated storage stations.
